Kansas City sits in the transition zone, the strip of the country where it is too hot for northern grasses to coast and too cold for southern grasses to survive. Our lawns are turf-type tall fescue and bluegrass: cool-season grasses that do their real growing in spring and fall, then hang on through a Missouri July. A program written for Atlanta or Minneapolis will fail here. Ours is written for 64114.

That is why our program is scheduled by soil temperature, not by the calendar on a franchise wall. Crabgrass germinates when soil holds 55°F for about five days, which in KC can be March 20 one year and April 10 the next. We track it and time the pre-emergent barrier to beat it.

The Meridian 5, briefly

Five visits: an early-spring pre-emergent with a light feed, a late-spring split application that extends the crabgrass barrier into July and knocks down the dandelion flush, a light summer feeding with grub prevention, the big early-fall rebuild feeding, and a late-fall winterizer that banks root carbohydrates for spring green-up. Broadleaf weeds are spot-treated on every visit, not blanket-sprayed. Blanket applications waste product on grass that does not need it and stress fescue in the heat.

What we will tell you honestly

No program eliminates every weed forever; anyone promising that is selling you a sign for their yard, not results for yours. What a properly timed program does is shift the balance year over year: thicker turf, fewer bare spots for weeds to exploit, and a lawn that needs less rescue every season. Most lawns look dramatically different by the second fall.
